With the very wet winters we are now experiencing, many of you will be feeling the effects of damp penetration. The most common visual symptom of rain penetration is damp patches on internal walls – often causing paint to flake or wallpaper to peel. However damp masonry caused by penetrating damp can also result in a wide range of other symptoms

  • Reduced thermal resistance of damp masonry – causing heat loss and condensation

  • Moss and mould growth

  • Frost damage

  • Rotting of embedded timbers

The cause of this is that Bricks and mortar have a great capacity to absorb water. Both contain tiny passageways that actually suck water into the wall. Water can also enter through tiny cracks between the bricks and mortar.

In particular the small vertical (head) joints between each brick are the most likely place where water is entering. Rarely are these joints filled solid with mortar. The horizontal joints (bed) in your brick wall are usually filled solid and resist water penetration.

Following the repair to these small holes or cracks, a Water repellent product can be applied that is designed to penetrate deeply into the brick and mortar. This will coat the insides of the tiny passageways in the brick and mortar whilst allowing the passageways to remain open allowing the brick and mortar to breathe
